Scott Valley and Alto

Scott Valley

Where my family built our childhood home on Louis Court and tucked between the rolling foothills of Mill Valley and the base of Horse Hill, Scott Valley is one of the town’s best-kept secrets including the Scott Valley dirt jumps which to this day are still standing—an intimate and upscale neighborhood prized for its peaceful ambiance, privacy, and family-friendly setting. With wide streets, spacious lots, and a limited number of homes, Scott Valley offers a rare sense of seclusion while remaining just minutes from downtown Mill Valley, Highway 101, and neighboring communities.

The neighborhood is home to the Scott Valley Swimming and Tennis Club, a long-standing local fixture that brings neighbors together through youth programs, swim teams, fitness classes, and social events. Just beyond the residential streets, residents enjoy easy access to scenic walking paths and open space, including the popular Horse Hill Preserve, where horses still graze and views stretch across the bay.

Homes in Scott Valley are often generously sized and thoughtfully designed, with styles ranging from traditional and mid-century to modern rebuilds, many tucked quietly into the hills or nestled on private cul-de-sacs. The surrounding landscape provides a lush, green backdrop, and many homes enjoy views of wooded ridgelines or the valley below.

Alto

Located at the southeastern edge of Mill Valley, Alto is a quiet and highly accessible neighborhood that combines suburban ease with proximity to all the best of Marin. Bordered by Mill Valley, Corte Madera, and the trails of Horse Hill, Alto serves as a central launching point for daily life—whether heading into San Francisco, exploring local parks, or enjoying the shops and eateries of nearby Tam Junction and downtown Mill Valley.

With flat streets, bike-friendly roads, and a walkable layout, Alto is especially popular with families and commuters. The neighborhood offers an array of housing styles—from classic ranch homes and remodeled bungalows to larger contemporary residences—many with yards, gardens, and views of Mount Tam. The vibe is low-key and unpretentious, with mature trees, friendly neighbors, and a strong sense of local pride.

Outdoor enthusiasts love Alto for its quick access to multi-use trails and open space preserves, including Alto Bowl and Horse Hill, where hiking, biking, and horseback riding are just steps from the front door. Top public and private schools are nearby, including the award-winning Edna Maguire Elementary and Marin Horizon School.
